AIR CONDITIONING, EXPLAINED

Useful answers.
Without the jargon.

The practical questions to ask before choosing a system, planning an installation or arranging a service.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Before, during and after installation.

How long does an installation take?

A straightforward single-room system is commonly installed within one working day. Multi-room, concealed and complex installations take longer. We agree the expected programme before work starts.

Will the pipework be visible?

Some installations use neat external trunking; others can use loft or ceiling routes. We agree the practical route and finish at survey. Concealing pipework may involve additional building work.

Do I need a separate electrical supply?

The supply depends on the selected equipment and the existing installation. We confirm the circuit, isolation and any electrical work in your quotation. Capacity alone is not enough to specify a circuit.

Do I need planning permission?

Planning requirements depend on the property, location and installation. Flats, leasehold homes, listed buildings and conservation areas can need additional consents. We consider the outdoor position and noise at survey; the relevant authority or freeholder confirms permission where needed.

How much does home air conditioning cost?

Our basic 2.5 kW single-room guide prices start at £1,650 for Midea Solstice, £1,950 for Mitsubishi Electric AY and £2,400 for Zen. Your final quotation depends on capacity, layout, routes, drainage, electrics and access.

Does air conditioning provide heating?

Yes. The modern split systems we normally install are reversible air-to-air heat pumps. They can heat or cool the room; output and efficiency vary with conditions.

Can every room have a different temperature?

Each indoor unit usually has its own temperature control. Indoor units connected to a standard multi-split outdoor unit normally share the overall heating or cooling mode.

Is air conditioning noisy?

Sound varies by model, capacity, fan speed and installation. We consider the indoor location, bed or seating position, outdoor location and the manufacturer’s sound information.

How often should I arrange servicing?

Most domestic systems should be serviced annually. Commercial or heavily used systems may need more frequent visits. Extended warranties can have specific maintenance conditions.

Can you service or repair equipment fitted by another company?

Yes, subject to safe access, condition and parts availability. Send the manufacturer, model, postcode and details of any fault.

Is domestic installation VAT-free?

Qualifying supplies and installations of fixed air-to-air heat pumps in residential accommodation can currently be zero-rated under HMRC’s energy-saving materials rules. This is not a blanket exemption for servicing, repairs, equipment-only sales or every type of work. Your quotation states the applicable VAT. Read the HMRC guidance.

Do you offer finance?

Yes. Eligible installations can be considered through Ideal4Finance, including a selected 0% APR option, subject to status and lender assessment. Obtain your written installation quotation before applying.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat or rented property?

The building layout, outdoor location, lease and permissions need checking. You may need freeholder or landlord consent as well as planning approval where applicable.

Can you add more rooms to a system later?

Sometimes. The outdoor unit must support the additional indoor combination, capacity and pipe routes. We can consider future rooms during the original design, but spare ports alone are not enough.

Do I have to decide the equipment before contacting you?

No. Room dimensions, photos and your postcode are enough to start the conversation. We help you compare appropriate systems and arrange a survey where needed.
